A sonic delight, Riley Catherall’s new single ‘Mother Please’ is both intimate and warm

Words by Tom Parker

‘Mother Please’ comes ahead of Catherall’s forthcoming debut album, When I Go, set for release on Friday July 23.

Emerging folk artist Riley Catherall has emerged with his new single and video, ‘Mother Please’. A sonic delight, the song accompanies Catherall’s delicate croon with eloquent strings, a steady acoustic and catchy guitar licks to create a wondrous atmosphere in itself.

On the surface, the song sounds simple, lending to its accessibility, however, there are many compositional intricacies in play here. The violin and collaborating guitars, Catherall’s vocals and backing vocals; while there’s many layers to the ‘Mother Please’ onion it never sounds superfluous or overwhelming.

When it comes to the song’s narrative, ‘Mother Please’ explores the feeling of being an enthusiastic and world-hungry 18-year-old keen to get out there and explore.

“When I turned 18 and got my license, I would always be out playing shows and driving around doing whatever it is 18-year-olds do,” Catherall says of ‘Mother Please’. “In turn, I’d always come home late at night and mum would be waiting up for me to make sure I got home safe.

“Now that I am in Melbourne, I am no longer coming home every night, so this was a song for my mum to say, ‘You don’t need to wait up for me anymore, but please don’t forget about me’.”

Given its sonic success, some of the credit for ‘Mother Please’ must be owed to EOR Studios’ Damian Cafarella who produced the song, while the accompanying video was directed by Tyler Ridgeway of Shoelace Creative and sees Catherall take to an old warehouse alongside his five bandmates.

‘Mother Please’ follows on from the success of ‘Vacant Lot’, Catherall’s early-2021 track which received airplay on triple j’s Roots ‘n All and spent four weeks in The Music Network‘s Hot 50 airplay charts.

Next up is Catherall’s debut album, When I Go, set for release on Friday July 23. Catherall will celebrate the release of When I Go with a show at The Curtin on Sunday September 19, amidst a larger national tour spanning 18 dates.
