A slab of Young Henrys’ iconic Newtowner Aussie Pale Ale is all you could ever want this Chrissy

words by august billy

Brb, I’m buying beers.

It’s been seven years since I first visited Young Henrys’ Newtown HQ for a mid-afternoon birthday pint. Did I know then that the Sydney brewery would become one of the country’s most respected and recognisable craft beer brands? Perhaps not, but even at that early date Young Henrys’ commitment to being not just a brewery, but a company of cultural import was evident.

Young Henrys launched in 2012 and the following year they teamed up with one of Australia’s beeriest bands, You Am I, to create Brew Am I – a new world pale ale made up of ingredients from the band members’ hometowns.

They’ve partnered with a number of other bands on limited edition brews since then, capturing the essence of Foo Fighters, Pond, DZ Deathrays and Frenzal Rhomb using little more than hops, barley and water.

But the real secret to Young Henrys’ success is the quality of its core range, the standout of which is the Newtowner Australian Pale Ale. This crisp and eminently drinkable pale ale has placed 4th in the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers poll for three consecutive years, and it’s in the running again this year. Suffice to say, it’s a bloody good stocking filler.
