The exhibit will run until October.

After being closed for the better part of two years, ACMI reopened in February to the glee of all Melburnians. It wasn’t closed for no reason, with a $40 million revamp taking place to take the space to the next level, and now it’s one of the most advanced museums in the world.

In its first few months of being open, ACMI has unveiled a bunch of exciting new events, installations and exhibits, but none is more nostalgic and thrilling as their just-announced Disney: The Magic of Animation.

Disney: The Magic of Animation has established quite a reputation across the world, regarded for providing a rare, untapped snapshot into nearly 100 magical years of Disney.

Featuring over 500 original art works from the 1920s through to the present day, including paintings, sketches and concept art specially selected by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library, punters will be able to revel in the beautiful nostalgia of films such as Fantasia (1940), Bambi (1942), The Jungle Book (1967) and The Little Mermaid (1989).

Closer to the current day, snapshots of Frozen (2013), Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016) all the way up to the studio’s latest critically-acclaimed release Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) are also set to feature.

Arriving at ACMI, Disney: The Magic of Animation will be making its Australian debut and comes as part of the city’s Melbourne Winter Masterpiece series, supported by Visit Victoria.

“We’re thrilled to bring Disney: The Magic of Animation to Australia as ACMI’s 2021 Melbourne Winter Masterpiece – the first since reopening after our $40 million transformation,” ACMI Director & CEO Katrina Sedgwick OAM said in a press statement.

“Disney’s pioneering work has brought the art of animation to audiences across the globe for nearly a century. This exhibition invites us behind the scenes, celebrating the artists and their incredible craft as they create the magical worlds and iconic characters that we know and love.”

Disney: The Magic of Animation will be showcased at ACMI from Thursday May 13 until Sunday October 17. More info via the ACMI website.
