A Man Called Son deliver nostalgic indie-rock anthem, ‘Plateau’

'Plateau' is the second single from the fourth AMCS album 'Timebombs in the Sea', due for release in early 2022

Following on from their critically praised 2020 single ‘What We Had’, Melbourne-based rockers A Man Called Son have just delivered an anthemic slice of indie-rock with their new single ‘Plateau’, flexing their songwriting muscles more than ever as they reflect on the nostalgic comforts of childhood.

With nods to the likes of Hoodoo Gurus, The Go-Betweens and The Church, ‘Plateau’ is a delightful near-four-minute journey of summery, upbeat rock, championed by intricate guitar melodies, endearing vocals, energetic percussion and incredibly tight musicianship, and we’re all about it.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The ongoing project of Simon Pearlman, A Man Called Son has been around for some time since first being conceived in Brisbane as a home studio project. With songwriter Simon at the helm, a relocation to Melbourne has seen a fresh lineup form, featuring the inimitable Mot Bollox (Guitars/effects), the dapper Thomas Madden (bass) and the jolly yet hard-hitting James Rance (drums/percussion) and with it an invigoratingly fresh batch of tracks.

A very clear testament to the band’s growth over the past few years, the indie-rock anthem is the second single lifted from their forthcoming album, ‘Timebombs in the Sea’, due for release in early 2022. The melancholy, 80s atmosphere of the first single ‘What We Had’ was the first fruits of their labour, and now we’ve finally been gifted another taster of what’s to come.

Renowned for their serene atmospheric jangly rock, ‘Plateau’ remains extremely faithful to the original sound of A Man Called Son while signifying a natural progression for a band who always had a pop-rock sensibility.

Packed with quality songwriting, infectious arrangements and that elusive takes-your-breath-away factor, the new warm single exhibits so many prevailing A Man Called Son qualities in one song (strong literate lyrics, soaring chorus, Simon’s characteristic voice and leisurely guitar lines) that capture you entirely, but it is the rapid-fire organ lick that makes your ears perk up, and a shift in tempo from previous releases that results in a single filled with variety and colour.

A rock song at its heart, the bouncy, light-hearted single showcases the band’s knack for melody and ability to craft an impossibly catchy tune as they reminisce about the nostalgic comforts of childhood and the refusal to conform to society’s norms. Mixed by Jordon Silva and mastered by Dave at Hiltongrove Mastering in the UK, the expertly-produced single arrives alongside a video clip comprising old and amusing family VHS footage, further resonating with all lovers of time gone by.

Simon continues to mine his treasure chest of influences in new and exciting ways and delivers a track that will be remembered as an instant classic, soundtracking your summer road trips for years to come.

For those keen to hear the rocking, organ-led ‘Plateau’ in the flesh, A Man Called Son will be launching the single on Thursday, December 16 at Whole Lotta Love in Melbourne. Finally hitting the stage after a long lockdown layover, they’ll be joined by local stalwarts Great Emu War Casualties and Divers on the night. You can purchase tickets to the event here.
