A Luca Brasi show always feels like a good yarn with your buddies

Luca Brasi
Words by Luke Carlino

An album release day is cause for a celebration, and Luca Brasi held a great one with their mates.

Luca Brasi celebrated their new album with an acoustic party and the good vibes you get at any Brasi gig were was amplified for the band’s record release celebration at The Curtin. The Tasmanians marked the release of their sixth album, The World Don’t Owe You Anything, with a stripped-back show that gave drummer Danny Flood the night off.

After a self-proclaimed “boozy dinner” thrown by their record company, the lads took the stage in good spirits, opening with the new album’s title track. Granted, this song was previously released, so the crowd had ample chance to learn the words, but the new-song gang vocals that flowed through the evening were still very impressive. Luca Brasi karaoke was on.

Tyler, Thomas and Patrick brought the banter and plenty of impromptu covers from Wheatus, Goo Goo Dolls and Oasis (is it even an acoustic show if no one plays Wonderwall?). There was an even split between the hits, deep cuts for the long-serving fans and tracks from the freshly released record. Plenty of lyrics were forgotten, riffs missed, and in-band ribbing given, all of which made the performance more special.

It was amazing how the band could switch from tipsy errors to flawless playing, tight vocal harmonies and impressive dynamics. Luca Brasi have been doing this for a while now (14 years, in fact), and it shows. Their usually highly energised punk rock catalogue translates beautifully to an acoustic format, proving that these songs are great, no matter the delivery. Special mention to Tyler’s solitary moment for his solo release Heaven in the Suburbs, which he dedicated to his son, who is currently fighting cancer. We wish him a speedy recovery and charge our glasses to many more years of Luca Brasi.
