Plans are in place for a 23 storey tower that is set to cantilever over the Melbourne Comedy Theatre.

With the rear of the Melbourne Comedy Theatre being knocked down to be replaced by a larger stage, the development will also include a 23 storey office tower. The building will also include flexible spaces that can be used for rehearsals and performances,  as well as offices and conference breakout rooms during the week. Lodged with the Victorian government, the $211 million development has been designed by architecture firm Architectus. A final decision on the application is set to be made by early 2023.

With the site being an entertainment venue since the 1840s, the Melbourne Comedy Theatre has operated since 1928. Coplete with a Florentine-style exterior and wrought iron balconies, the facade of the building will not be altered in the proposed plans.

As reported by The Urban Developer, LaSalle plans to demolish an existing carpark building at 222 Exhibition Street and build the tower over a two level basement, following design plans by Architectus.
