Jazz in the Square returns this year celebrating International Jazz Day 2023 with another jam-packed day of jazz in the centre of Melbourne at Federation Square on Saturday April 29.
Jazz in the Square aims to celebrate the richness and diversity of the Australian jazz community, with Federation Square’s The Edge coming alive from 1pm with some of Melbourne’s finest emerging and established jazz artists.

Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music’s Jazz & Improvisation Department are a key partner for the event, presenting a mixture of large and small ensembles led by staff (sessional and continuing) during the day.
Their inaugural evening gala presentation will commence at 7:30pm and feature the sublime improvised sounds of ZÖJ (Gelareh Pour and Brian O’Dwyer). Following them, pianist Aaron Choulai – recently appointed as Artistic Director for the Australian Art Orchestra and returned from living in Japan – will conclude with his trio featuring Tamara Murphy and James McLean.
