Docklands unveils new cycle bridge connecting Melbourne's inner west to CBD, as the West Gate Tunnel Project bridge opens at Footscray Road.
Melbourne’s inner west is now connected to the CBD via a striking new cycling and pedestrian bridge that spans Footscray Road.
The bright green elevated crossing, part of the Victorian government’s West Gate Tunnel Project, provides a safer alternative for pedestrians and cyclists navigating the busy Footscray Road and Waterfront Way intersection. Suspended from two 40-metre tall steel pylons, the 220-metre bridge draws design inspiration from the iconic West Gate Bridge.
“This new bridge over Footscray Road is a game-changer – a big step towards transforming the corridor into an elevated cycling super-highway between the city and the west,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

This new infrastructure creates a seamless connection between the Capital City Trail and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, enhancing one of Melbourne’s key strategic cycling corridors. It also offers a safer route for Docklands Primary School students and their families who walk, scoot or cycle to school.
The bridge represents another step toward transforming the Footscray Road corridor into Australia’s premiere cycling super-highway. It forms a critical link to the upcoming 2.5-kilometre veloway scheduled to open later in 2025.
Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams described the bridge as a “game-changer” that moves Melbourne closer to having an elevated cycling super-highway connecting the city centre with western suburbs.
The West Gate Tunnel Project heats up
The West Gate Tunnel Project aims to transform travel in Melbourne’s west by providing a second river crossing that will reduce congestion and remove approximately 9,000 trucks from local roads daily.
In total, the project will deliver more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded paths to improve cycling accessibility throughout the area.
The bridge’s distinctive green colour and cable-stayed design make it an instant landmark in the Docklands precinct, while its practical purpose addresses long-standing safety concerns for non-motorised commuters traveling between the city and inner western suburbs.
For families and commuters from Footscray and surrounding western suburbs, the bridge eliminates the need to navigate busy intersections, creating an express route into the Docklands retail precinct and CBD.
This cycling infrastructure expansion reflects Melbourne’s growing commitment to sustainable transportation options and safer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.
