Samantha Poulter, the Sydney-born, Berlin-based DJ and producer behind Logic1000, grew up Catholic. The cover of Confirmation! is a photo from her Confirmation Day, and it’s adorable.
Opener 48 Fairmount takes its name from a small three-bedroom house in Titirangi, New Zealand, where Poulter’s grandparents landed with their six children after migrating from Brunei. It’s brief and built from old family tapes, with a toddler, probably baby Sammy, chirping “Mummy” and “Daddy”.
KUČKA, Poulter’s self-confessed “vocal crush”, brings sexy alien energy to All For You: “Layin’ in the back seat, calling me, calling me.” Jersey, with Jam City, is classic piano house on an irresistible 4/4, and pure Chicane.
Christine And The Queens join The Only One, an empowerment anthem about “the games of a man’s heart” with a hook that stretches “can” as far as it’ll go. 2Love, with FAUZIA, cruises back to Poulter’s “psych pop-obsessed days as a teenager in Sydney”. The title track bangs in like a battering ram, all throbbing bass and scalpel-sharp beats.
Closer Forgiven is the comedown. It reprises lyrics from DJ Logic Please Forgive Me, the breakout Four Tet dropped at Coachella in 2019: “You’ve been cheatin’ and telling me lies.”
Poulter wrote the album over two years with her partner, Thom McAlister. Her debut, Mother, dealt with matrescence. Confirmation! lines up the child, the woman and the mother and gets them all dancing.
Confirmation! is out now via Because Music.
