Dinosaur Jr are hauling album number 13 to Melbourne in January

Dinosaur Jr will tour their new record There Near through Australia and New Zealand in January, stopping at Melbourne’s Forum on 23 January.

Bring earplugs. Dinosaur Jr are heading back to Australia and New Zealand in January with a new album in tow.

Frontier Touring has booked Dinosaur Jr for six shows behind There Near, the band’s 13th studio album, which is out now. Auckland Town Hall gets them first on 16 January, and the Melbourne leg lands at the Forum exactly a week later. Perth wraps things up at the Ice Cream Factory on 26 January.

J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph made the record at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, the town where the band formed in 1984. They chipped away at it in quick, concentrated stretches across a year and played almost everything themselves. Mascis, the band’s main songwriter, is on guitar and vocals, with Barlow sharing the singing from behind his bass. Local musician Ken Mauri drops in on piano and organ.

Presale access for Frontier members opens at 3pm local time on 23 October and runs for 92 hours, or until the allocation is gone. General sale starts at 12pm local time on 27 October, with Ticketek handling the Melbourne show. Buyers are capped at four tickets per show in the presale and eight on general sale. Like most of the run, the Forum date is 18+. Auckland and Sydney are the only all-ages rooms on the tour.

The band were last here in 2024, on a run marking 30 years of 1993’s Where You Been. This time a fresh album is in the mix, so new songs such as Several Got Away and Blowin’ Up are likely to turn up next to Freak Scene, Feel the Pain, Out There and Just Like Heaven.

There Near is the sixth album the original line-up have made since reuniting in 2005. The band filled the five years since 2021’s Sweep It Into Space with live records and vault clear-outs.
