Grab a book, skip the small talk; Book Doof's back in Melbourne this weekend, this time taking over Section 8.
Book Doof, Melbourne’s cult silent reading party, is setting up at Section 8 in Tattersalls Lane for its next session this weekend.
For anyone who’s missed it so far, Book Doof is the brainchild of Melbourne local Grant Krupp, who set out to create a hangout with all the buzz of a night out but none of the pressure to perform or make conversation.
Guests simply turn up with a book, find a spot in the room and read, surrounded by ambient music, low lighting and a bunch of strangers doing exactly the same thing.

It’s a low-key structure that’s proven surprisingly popular since Book Doof’s trial sessions kicked off late last year, drawing steady crowds keen for a few hours of quiet company.
The format taps into a broader shift happening across Melbourne’s social scene, where run clubs, communal dinners and other low-key meetups are drawing crowds precisely because they offer connection without the intensity that comes with a typical night out.
Alcohol-free options like coffee raves have followed a similar trajectory, reflecting a wider appetite for socialising that feels genuine rather than transactional.
Krupp has previously stated his intention to keep Book Doof free forever, on the basis that reading should stay accessible and open to everyone. This session’s pay-as-you-feel structure doesn’t move away from that ethos so much as build on it, giving attendees the option to chip in if they’re able, without turning anyone away who can’t.
Section 8 marks a new venue for the series, swapping in a laneway bar setting for the next round of quiet company.
As always, there’s no need to book; just rock up, find a seat and settle in for a few hours of low-pressure reading among like-minded strangers.
