30 hand-picked films from around the world land in local cinemas for a curious, colourful celebration of storytelling made for young minds.

The Children’s International Film Festival (CHIFF) returns to Melbourne screens from 6 June, transforming the cooler months into a cinematic adventure for families. Curated exclusively with children in mind, the festival showcases 30 features and shorts from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia, delivering magic, heart and wonder in some of Melbourne’s favourite independent cinemas.

This is more than just kids’ movies — it’s a genuine international showcase of acclaimed titles that have wowed festivals overseas. Artistic Director Thomas Caldwell says it’s the only Australian festival where every film is chosen specifically for young audiences, promising to spark imagination and curiosity during the long winter school holidays.

CHIFF 2026

  • Runs 6 June – 5 July at Classic Cinemas Elsternwick, Lido Cinemas Hawthorn and Cameo Cinemas Belgrave
  • Features 30 films including Toy Story 5, The Last Whale Singer and Oscar-nominated Little Amélie

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Highlights include the beautiful animation The Last Whale Singer, Disney & Pixar’s Toy Story 5 for a Family Fun Day, and the Cannes-premiered Little Amélie or the Character of Rain screening in English for the first time in Australia. Live-action gems like Bird Boy and Momo (starring Martin Freeman) sit alongside inventive animations such as Papaya, Into the Wonderwoods and Kayara.

Younger viewers (ages five and under) are well catered for with Pol the Pirate Mouse, Momonsters: The Movie and Emma & Thomas. Two films will screen in their original Czech and French languages, adding an extra layer of cultural discovery. The program also celebrates anniversaries of beloved classics Fly Away Home (1996) and Flight of the Navigator (1986).

CHIFF continues to stand out for its thoughtful curation and commitment to quality children’s cinema. With affordable tickets and multiple Melbourne locations, it’s an ideal way for families to escape the winter blues and share unforgettable big-screen experiences.
