Vinyl Vixens has spent 10 years championing femme DJs in Melbourne. Now it’s time to celebrate

Words by staff writer

Vinyl Vixens celebrates a decade of femme and nonbinary electronic music with a massive Collingwood party.

Vinyl Vixens is celebrating a full decade of championing femme and nonbinary electronic music talent across Melbourne.

The collective will mark the milestone with a sprawling anniversary party at Trainscendence in Collingwood on 23 May. Four different crews will each take over a separate floor for a six-hour session spanning all genres of dance music. Vinyl Vixens will share the bill with Miss Jade, AyAyAy Amigos and MzRizk presents: Habibi Hafla, with full lineups for each floor still to be announced.

What began in 2016 as a casual beer garden idea between friends has since become one of Naarm’s most significant community-driven electronic music collectives. Built around the core mission of femme and nonbinary artists empowering and supporting each other, the group has hosted hundreds of events across dozens of Melbourne venues over the past 10 years.

Beyond the dancefloor, Vinyl Vixens has carved out a serious legacy in mentorship and education. The collective developed its own Incubator program for emerging artists and partnered with Yarra Youth Service on a dedicated DJ skills initiative. Between 2020 and 2022, the group also ran Let’s Talk About Decks, a Creative Victoria-funded series of live-streamed DJ events and artist interviews spotlighting femme and nonbinary talent from across the local scene.

Over the past decade, the collective has worked with a vast roster of artists as performers and mentors, from CC Disco and Jennifer Loveless to Mell Hall, DJ Kiti, Chiara Kickdrum and Miranda Skye, among dozens more. That network has helped launch and grow careers across Melbourne’s electronic music landscape, with many alumni going on to earn international recognition.

The anniversary celebration runs from 7:30pm to 1:30am, with tickets available through Eventbrite. After 10 years of intimate gigs, panel discussions, livestreams, workshops and grassroots community building, the four-floor format is a fitting way to bring the collective’s extended network together under one roof.
