The park blends imaginative play with the beauty of the natural world with the design centred around the idea of home; reflecting Woodlea as both a place for families to grow and as a thriving habitat for native birds, insects, reptiles, and animals.

At the heart of the Melbourne playground are towering steel and timber pods, inspired by the intricate nests of the native Reed Warbler. Each pod is whimsical and unique, rising up to seven metres high, and surrounded by soaring Billy Button sculptures that reach nine metres into the sky.

Hazelwood Park includes large playground pods with slides and climbing nets, swings and a shaded billabong-inspired waterplay area, and quiet retreat zones under the trees for moments of calm.

Thomas Banham, Woodlea Landscape Manager, says it’s all about connection to the local environment.

“We wanted to create a space where children could explore, imagine, and connect with the natural world in a meaningful way. Woodlea has a strong diversity of local wildlife, from sugar gliders to dragonflies, and we wanted Hazelwood Park to help children build a connection to this unique ecosystem.”

This playground is designed for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, to play, connect, and explore together. With accessible paths for wheelchairs and prams, plus quiet retreat areas and sensory zones for neurodivergent visitors
