Carbon neutral concerts? This free solar-powered gig proves the future is now

solar sessions
Words by Mina Wakefield

Wildlive is hosting a ages showcase at Collingwood Yards to show off their fully solar-powered stage.

Many of us don’t consider the environmental toll of live music. Although it doesn’t produce much waste, it does use a heck of a lot of energy, which is what one company, Wildlive, is trying to change.

The company has developed Australia’s very first low-consumption, solar-powered live production set up. To show it off, they’re throwing a free, all-ages party in the leafy courtyard of Collingwood Yards on Friday, October 11. There, artists including Kim Churchill, MzRizk, Wilson Blackley, Charlie Needs Braces and The Stamps will take to the eco-friendly stage as part of the company’s Solar Sessions.

In the early afternoon, the event will begin with the panel Sustainable Choices, Financial Voices: The Economic Case for Greener Events. Hosted in partnership with VMDO, the panel of music industry professionals will discuss all things live music and environmental impact.

After that, Wildlive founder Alex Pinte will introduce the fully solar-powered sound system designed by French start-up PikiP Solar Speakers. Then the carbon-neutral concert will begin.

Wildlive is committed to transforming musical events through sustainable technology but isn’t willing to compromise on sound. Partnering with innovative brands, they offer audio and lighting solutions powered by renewable energy sources. Their goal is to deliver intentional, carbon-neutral live performances and offer easy solutions to sustainable dilemmas.

Wildlive has already provided its sustainable designs to events like Queenscliff Queenscliff Music Festival, New Year’s Eve on the Hill, St Kilda Festival, Sydney Road Street Party, Byron Music Festival, Laneway Festival Sydney and more.

The pre-music panel discussion includes industry professionals such as Berish Bilander, Chief Executive Officer from Green Music Australia, Vicky Keeler, General Manager of Strawberry Fields Festival, Jess Flee, Co-founder and Managing Director from Green my Plate, and Jen Kyna, director from Earthed Consulting.

Together they will discuss the importance of sustainable solutions for live music production, as well as the economic impact, decision-making and general challenges that come with these solutions. With industry professionals on the panel ranging from event organisers to sustainable problem-solvers, the discussion will have a variety of brilliant insights.

The live music kicks off at 5pm showcasing the solar-powered speakers. Featuring will be Kim Churchill, Wildlives’ supporting artist who has played at The Solar Sessions around Australia. “Getting a lot closer to the carbon-neutral line is very doable, and this crew is getting dang close,” says Churchill.
