‘We live for this’: Juke Joints is hosting an old school day party at Section 8

Words by Coco Veldkamp

Because everything sounds better on vinyl.

Get ready to celebrate five amazing years of beats, vinyl and unforgettable parties. Mark your calendars because Juke Joints is throwing a free epic party on January 20th at Section 8 and Ferdydurke.

Juke Joints, the club night and record label, was originally started in 2017 by Shan Frenzie and Eric Ryan AKA Obliveus, forged over their mutual love of playing 45s in their respective cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

With plans to make Melbourne Juke Joints’ forever home, Obliveus decided to join forces with DJ Ghostnotes. From the keen reception at their first midweek party at Section 8, they knew they were onto something.

“Our vision has always been one where an open format approach is our aim. It’s why you’ll hear reggae, funk, soul, hip-hop, bass, DNB, jungle, dub, boogie, house and disco – all on 45, at every party,” Ryan explained.

With half a decade of setting Melbourne’s music scene alight under their belt, Juke Joints is ready to celebrate. This free party promises to be bigger and better than ever before – and they’ve got a lot to be proud of.

“Some notable highlights over these past five years would be the time ITF World DJ Champion and Australian DMC legend J-Red caned a Christmas jam set that had the packed venue in awe.

“Then there was the time Robert Smith (Dusty Donuts) arrived from Germany with another Australian cut-master, DJD (Sydney), and the two set the place on fire with a dynamic routine you simply had to see to believe.

“Or that time DJ Katch (from the Resin Dogs) and Tobey Gee came down from Brizvegas to drop a stack of records from their TakeFingz label and blew the car park up!” Ryan fondly recollected.

“We’ve had break-dance circles, impromptu Cypher battles and that many fist pumps for dropping quality bombs and packed dance floors that erupt every month,” says Ryan.

“We live for this party and feel so fortunate having a venue like Section 8 lets us play exactly what we want for punters dancing their arses off to sounds they weren’t expecting on a format their parents even forgot about. We didn’t!”

Kicking off at 2pm and running through to the early hours of the morning, the day promises something a little something for everyone.

For those looking to add a unique spin to their music collection, don’t miss the record fair on-site on the day. Discover hidden gems, rare finds, and vintage vinyl that will make your collection truly one-of-a-kind. And when you need a break from the dance floor, a BBQ will be on standby to keep you fuelled throughout the night.

Whether you’ve been a loyal Juke Joints fan since day one or you’re just discovering the magic, attending this party is a no-brainer. The beats will be pumping, the vinyl will be spinning, and the sun will be (hopefully) shining. January 20th is a date you won’t want to miss.
