A spooky immersive theatre event is coming to Melbourne

Malthouse Theatre

It's about a wolf, a myth, and a creepy haunted town.

The Malthouse has announced the second half of the season and it’s littered with gems. Our pick of the lot is a large-scale immersive theatre event called Hour of the Wolf – a spook-tastic show unlike anything Australian theatre has offered up before.

Showing at the Merlyn Theatre, the presentation will debut in October, just in time to get audience members good and ready in the Halloween spirit. The story follows interwoven stories of the residents of a cursed town called Hope Hill and the happenings between the hours of 3am to 4am on an ill-fated evening.

Wearing headphones, guests will have the chance to choose which of the 10 storylines appeals to them most and pick left or right at the end of each scene. The actors will perform their roles three times, giving guests the opportunity to experience the performance from different points of view.

Hour of the Wolf follows the Malthouse’s original immersive work, Because the Night, which received glowing reviews and was touted as the first truly immersive Australian play.

“Immersive theatre is one the most exciting theatrical forms I have ever worked in. I’ve always wanted to create fantasy worlds you can surround yourself in, and this is the live, theatrical form that can achieve this. I’m thrilled to continue innovating what immersive theatre means in an Australian context with an incredibly talented team,” says Matthew Lutto, the Malthouse Theatre’s artistic director and co-CEO.

Also on the agenda for the second half of the season is Alistair Baldwin’s debut comedy Telethon Kid, which follows Perth Children’s Hospital’s poster child as he reconnects with his paediatric doctor in an unexpected romantic affair.

Last year’s experimental hit Chase is being brought back for another run and will play as a double feature alongside the heavy-hitting performance Whose Gonna Love ‘Em? I am that i AM.
