Sweat, sex, desperation and longing at The Tote, The Gaso, The Brunny…

Melbourne Fringe
Words by Staff Writer

Isabella Gilbert returns with her solo show PUMP, an exploration of club culture and the artist experience, for Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The deer in the headlights. The invincibility. The sweat. The youth. The bars. The boys. The hookups on dance floors. The other people’s caps. The gin and tonics. The $4 schooners. The Brunny. The Gaso. The Tote.

After a sell-out season at Melbourne Fringe 2023, VCA graduate Isabella Gilbert is back with her second solo show, PUMP. This evocative performance delves into the exhilarating and often isolating experiences of youth, capturing the sweaty desperation, the longing, and the search for validation that defines club culture.

PUMP draws striking parallels between these experiences and the artist’s journey, exploring the common themes of seeking intimacy, identity, and security.

PUMP is a vibrant and provocative reflection on the fleeting invincibility of youth, the thrill of dance floors, and the inevitable fading of the “anything could happen” energy. Gilbert’s performance is both personal and relatable, weaving together anecdotes of wild nights, hookups, and the harsh light of morning that follows.

PUMP runs from 30 September to 06 October at The Motley Bauhaus – Cabaret Stage, with a 60-minute performance each night starting at 8:40pm. Tickets are available at $28.00, with various concessions and discounts offered.

This show is recommended for audiences aged 15 and above, with content warnings for strobe lighting, mild coarse language, sexual references, and more. The Motley Bauhaus venue offers limited accessibility, with wheelchair access to downstairs spaces only.
