Define your genre in five words or less:
PoCoFoCa: porno country folk cabaret.
Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?
We had to make up our own genre, because we couldn’t figure out what pigeonhole we’d fit into – so I hope they’d say that we sound like nothing they’ve ever heard before. There are eight of us on stage, dressed up to the nines, so hopefully we look like nothing they’ve ever seen before either.
How long have you been gigging and writing?
As 2013 draws to a close, the crew of The Good Ship will celebrate five years together, being tossed and turned (mostly tossed) on the stormy seas off the coast of the Australian contemporary music landscape.
What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?
That depends a lot on your definition of success. If we can write music that resonates with enough people that we could sustain ourselves as full-time musicians, I reckon that’d be worth raising our glasses to toast. We don’t aspire to be rich or famous – but if it happens we will certainly have a red-hot go at getting used to it.
Describe the best/worst/strangest gig you have ever played.
Early in 2011 we went to Tasmania for the first time, and played a gig in Launceston, where we knew nobody. It was a bar in a backpackers hostel, but it seemed as though the hostel was shut. Deserted, more likely. It was ghost town creepy. The sound was terrible. We played to an audience of exactly 12 people. That sounds pretty crappy, but five of those 12 people had dressed in full pirate regalia and went absolutely mental while we played. After the gig, they all hung around, and eventually the guys who ran the bar left us the keys and went home, while we sat up ‘til the wee hours, hanging out with these crazy Launie pirates. We’ve kept in touch, and just recently two of those goons flew up to Brisbane to see our theatre show and hang out with us again. Shoutouts to MWRD and DMcOH for fandom above and beyond the call.
Name an interview question you wish someone would ask you, and answer it.
Can I buy you a drink? Yes thanks, a Jameson’s Irish Whiskey, neat.
THE GOOD SHIP launch The Seven Seas at The Toff In Town on Sunday December 8.
