So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?
Susy Blue. I’m the benevolent dictator; I write the songs and their arrangements, sing them and occasionally play flute, piccolo and more recently keys.
Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like ?
Weimer and whimsy (I will say it again so I am right). Most recently someone said ‘Gypsy-folk-soul band’ which I liked!
What do you love about making music?
Everything. I love performing when everyone on stage is feeling it and you love the music, tinkering around by myself and becoming obsessed with melodies, writing, arranging, jamming, and recording.
What do you hate about the music industry?
Everything – except occasional free alcohol and camaraderie.
If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?
Maybe Bach cause he was a genius and invented a lot of beautiful harmonies – but I’m pretty sure he’d either laugh or cry, and then liken me to a dog dancing on its hind legs. Perhaps some of my musical heroes who are still alive, like Bjork, Radiohead, C.W Stoneking, Regina Spektor or Joanna Newsom would be a little nicer.
If you could assassinate one person or band from popular music, who would it and why?
No one. I like laughing at Kenny G youtube videos but that’s as nasty as it gets.
What can a punter expect from your live show?
A spectacle of interesting and kooky songs that are always changing and genre hopping, with a stage full of talented musicians from double bass, to banjo, violin, clarinet and sax.
What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?
Our recent debut album Curly Girl which we released in May this year. Also some handmade singles off the album. I’ve got some older 2008 EPs floating round somewhere in my room too.
When’s the gig and with who?
A good Sunday arvo session – Sunday November 6 from 2pm at The Evelyn, with Language of the Birds and Lily Parker.
Anything else to add?
Check out our film clip Circus, released this week!
