60 Seconds With…Oliver Downes

How long have you been gigging and writing?

I wrote my first song in London back in 2008 but only really started to find a flow once I returned to Australia about five years ago.

Tell us about your favourite gig.

I played at the DIY festival Bat Attack, protesting the clearing and mining of the Leard State Forest early last year. My last set was on the final day with the sun setting over the bush. It was glorious.

Where does you inspiration come from?

Nature-the ocean, going bushwalking, particular books that’ve grabbed me such as Ishiguru’s Never Let Me Go. Musically, the ‘80s and ‘90s work of Leonard Cohen remains a huge guiding star, as well as particular Kate Bush albums like The Hounds of Love

What does success mean to you?

As far as I can see continuing to make music and lead a life fuelled by music is success. Having the willpower to stay true to whatever urge drives you to make music in the first place no matter what degree of attention your music receives can be difficult to do.

Why should everyone come and see your band?

For my upcoming launch gigs I’ll be joined by a pair of virtuoso string players, Holly Downes on double bass and Chris Stone (The String Contingent) on violin.  Melbourne punters will also get to see Mark Leahy (The Twoks) on drums.
