60 Seconds With Magic Mountain Band

“My name’s Brett Langsford and I play guitar in Magic Mountain Band.”

So then, what’s your name and what you ‘do’ in the band?

“My name’s Brett Langsford and I play guitar in Magic Mountain Band.”

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

“So far I’ve been told Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake and Bill Frisell. I think we are a little bit like all these artists, but not a lot like any of them.”

What do you love about making music?

“The moment when your hands stumble upon something they have never done before and you know you’ve got a song. The moment you first play that song with the band. The moment you know you’ve captured it in a recording and the moment you first perform it for an audience.”

What do you hate about the music industry?

“Mostly the lack of support for artist to develop through time. The industry demands instant results, yet very few artists throughout history have created meaningful and enduring work right off the bat. You may have a hit single on debut but the kind of work that informs future generations mostly comes from artist given the chance to develop through time. Picasso didn’t discover cubism with his first painting!”

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

“Nick Drake would be cool. I think he might like our stuff. Mostly I’d just want to tell him that his genius doesn’t go unnoticed in the future.”

If you could assassinate one person or band from popular music, who would it and why?

“There’s no person or band I would assassinate from popular music. Although anyone who is more interested in the POPULAR part gives me the shits!”

What can a punter expect from your live show?

“First class beards!”

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?

“We have our debut EP Over An Ocean Away.”

When’s the gig and with who?

“We are currently in the middle of a Tuesday night residency at The Toff In Town with special guest Magnolia, Spender and Luke Howard Ensemble.”
