Cage Trax Record Launch marks 25 years of The Late Show at Revolver Upstairs with a special vinyl release capturing the venue's distinctive sound.
The Late Show has maintained a strong presence in Melbourne’s club scene for over two decades at Naarm institution Revolver Upstairs. Pioneered by DJ Ransom, the Saturday night staple has documented countless dance music moments since its inception. Heralded for keeping foundations solid from day one, Ransom has progressed the sound of DJing from the birth of 2 step to the now grown-up speed garage at 150 bpms.
Branched over two rooms, the sound of Saturdays at The Late Show has always been topical, forward-thinking and bass heavy. Over the years, the night has documented individual music moments, showcasing Baltimore club, nu school breaks, UK funky, niche, bassline, and baile funk with all their sub-genres and evolutions mixed in. From edit culture and blogging about fidget house to USB swapping, listening parties and hosting international DJs, The Late Show’s commitment to great DJing and upfront dance music has earned it a special place in Melbourne’s clubbing history.

To commemorate this milestone, The Late Show and Revolver Upstairs Records have created a four-track vinyl release (five tracks if you purchase digital) featuring music from longtime residents. The aptly named Cage Trax EP features tracks from TLS residents including Cable 54 (a collaboration between Ransom and Tonelab Damo), Tony 2000, DJ Snow Fleas (aka Lewis CanCut) and Paz. The recordings aim to capture the distinctive sounds that emanate from the venue’s DJ cage.
The release includes Cable 54’s Bush Cow Milk, a track featuring crunched-up drum samples, one-finger bleep lines and pulsing analogue bass. Tony 2000 contributes Tec-Star, described as a hazy jack track of stuttered vocal chops, cassette-quality strings and SH101 bass tabs. DJ Snow Fleas delivers It’s Magic, combining budget boogie keys hovering over chorused-out Juno licks, while Paz closes the release with Rock Wilder, a cavernous electro jam with pipe bass banging over stuttered beats.
Revolver Upstairs Records
Revolver Upstairs Records encourages fans to arrive early (dinner time) as there will be a limited number of vinyl pressings available on the night. Each record cover forms part of a larger mural, making each unit individual and collectible. The celebration includes a live performance from Cable 54, followed by DJ sets from Ransom, Tony 2000, Paz, Lewis CanCut, Alex Virr, Coldpast, Hayj Kovac and Henry Who.
The official release date for the EP is 23 May 2025, with digital versions available via Dropbox and Soundcloud. The release has been mastered by Dan Elleson and carries the catalogue number RUR012.
This release marks a slight departure from previous Revolver Upstairs Records offerings, focusing squarely on the venue’s back bar and its reputation for groove-driven eclecticism. As the premiere pie to roll off the lot, Cage Trax represents both a celebration of The Late Show’s past and its continuing influence on Melbourne’s electronic music landscape.
