You Am I are bringing Hourly Daily to Melbourne Recital Centre with a string quartet

Words by staff writer

You Am I are reimagining 1996 classic Hourly Daily with a string quartet across five east coast shows.

You Am I are bringing in a string quartet for Strung Up, a tour reworking 1996 album Hourly Daily.

The east coast dates pair one of Australia’s most enduring rock bands with orchestral arrangements, a setup well outside the usual guitars-and-drums territory. Handpicked manoeuvres from Hourly Daily form the spine of the shows, with picks drawn from right across the band’s long catalogue filling out each night, all carried by a four-piece string section.

It centres on the 30th anniversary of Hourly Daily, the album that topped the ARIA Albums Chart on release and settled in as one of the defining Australian records of the 1990s. Rather than replaying those tracks note for note, You Am I reimagine them, letting the quartet reshape melodies that fans have known for three decades.

Five shows make up the run, landing at some of the grandest rooms in the country. It opens with the band’s first ever appearance inside the Concert Hall at Sydney Opera House on 18 October, then moves to two nights at Brisbane’s Tivoli, before closing with a Melbourne Recital Centre double on 5 and 6 November.

Tickets reach the general public from 10am AEST on 30 June through TEG Dainty. Ahead of that, a 24-hour presale for artists and partners opens at 10am AEST on 29 June, leaving a tight window for anyone keen to lock in seats early.

The anniversary brings a reissue too. Hourly Daily returns to vinyl on 9 October, arriving alongside Dailies, Seconds, a 14-track collection of B-sides and demos from the same era.

Across album highlights and deeper selections, Strung Up recasts a body of work You Am I have spent three decades building, this time with a string quartet sharing the stage.
