Wonderland Spiegeltent returns with more than a month of circus, cabaret, comedy, burlesque, music and family shows by the sea.

Delivering world-class entertainment within an enchanting vintage structure, Wonderland Spiegeltent will once again be taking up residency on the foreshore of Barwon Heads with their spectacular program of live entertainment from December 26 2021 right through to January 30 2022.

A favourite among locals year after year, the beautiful 1930s nostalgic wooden mirrored travelling European circus tent will become home to performances of all kinds, ranging from kids shows and live music to raunchy up-late cabaret and circus extravaganzas. Packed with glittering, thrilling, mesmerising and heartwarming entertainment and inviting audiences to step back in time and recapture the magic from the Golden Age of circus and travelling entertainment, the glitz and glam flow on to the outside with Spiegeltent surrounded by carnival-style rides, a food van and a garden bar, so you can keep the party going.

Looking to the program this year, the event promises to be an art and entertainment playground for all. For the families, Circus Wonderland is returning with a heart-warming hour of spectacle, fun, and fantasy. A mesmerising cast of world-class circus acrobats, who always manage to deliver hilarious and thrilling circus fun for all ages, will keep everyone on the edge of their seats as they present a hilarious and thrilling magical Circus Wonderland Adventure for the whole family.

For those who love their cabaret, Yummy: Selects will return to Barwon Heads, taking the troupe’s acclaimed first show YUMMY to a whole new level, including all the audience favourites and brand spanking new surprises. The feature-length spectacle will feature highly choreographed dance numbers as well as funny, surreal and touchingly raw performances from a whos-who of widely acclaimed drag artists. It’s a high energy show that celebrates the feminine in all its forms and will be running from Tuesday, January 4 until Saturday, January 8.

Combining circus and comedy into a celebration of spandex, neon and acrobatics, Werk It is an all-new, late-night, high energy, acrobatic comedy romp. Created by Melbourne Fringe favourites, Circus Trick Tease, the team features some of Australia’s hottest acrobats, including hula hoop sensation Lisa Lottie, acrobat all-rounder Richard Sullivan, award-winning Vincent van Berkel, real-life strong woman Cassia Jamieson, and circus extraordinaire Malia Walsh. Together, the over-the-top ensemble will be hip-thrusting their way into an Aerobics Oz Style fever dream, delivering a riot of colour and movement with more sass and swagger than a TLC video clip.

If you’re looking for another laugh, Karen From Finance Is Out Of Office is a must-see. Starring drag queen Karen From Finance (from ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’), this one-woman show is packed with all of her trademark high-camp and hilarious mashups, plus all the tomfoolery you can poke a presentation pointer at. A journey of self-discovery… and self-annihilation, there’s only one show to get to on Friday, January 28.

If you’re perhaps looking to add some live music to your calendar over the summer, there’s a couple we’d recommend getting yourself to.

First up on Thursday, January 6, Joe Camilleri & The Black Sorrows will take to the stage as they celebrate the September release of their 19th studio album – and Joe’s 50th album – Saint Georges Road. As one of Australia’s most prolific and enduringly popular bands, Joe Camilleri & The Black Sorrows are renowned for their high-energy live shows, musicianship and infectious, rootsy rhythms. Camilleri has been at the forefront of Australian music for decades as leader of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons and The Black Sorrows, and a writer of radio anthems Hit & Run, Shape I’m In, Chained To The Wheel, Harley & Rose & Never Let Me Go. In this one night only performance, you will see Joe and The Black Sorrows in full flight performing the classic soul, blues and country hits that span Camilleri’s multi-platinum career along with a selection from Saint Georges Road.

If spending the evening with an Aussie soul singing legend tickles your fancy, lock in Saturday, January 29 when Multi ARIA award-winning artist Kate Ceberano comes into town. Having been in the business for more than 35 years – writing and performing both jazz and pop music – with multiple Platinum and Gold albums to her name, Kate’s work, craft and vision are now imbued in our collective DNA. Kate Ceberano is a bona fide national treasure, possessing one of the great voices of her generation – it will be a night of nights to finish off the Wonderland Spiegeltent season.

There will also be performances from Melbourne country-pop band Darlinghurst on January 9, Award-winning Australian artist Fanny Lumsden on January 14, funk, flute, sax, synth and groove extraordinaire band Vaudeville Smash on January 21, INXSIVE, the INXS Tribute Show on January 22, the one and only Ella Hooper on January 23, and The Big Bash Band on January 25.

Wonderland Spiegeltent shows often come with a word of warning – it’s a little bit saucy, most definitely fun and once you’ve experienced it’s a bohemian love story you’ll never forget. To us, that sounds like the perfect way to spend a summer in Barwon Heads.
