Where to see tonight’s supermoon in Melbourne

If you’re at all keen on catching the supermoon, you best get out and do it tonight. Otherwise, you’ll be waiting around until 2034. Besides, if we continue to carry on the way we’re doing now, we’ll probably all be extinct by then. Best pop out for a squizz tonight.

Expert moon boffins are suggesting the best time to bask in its glory will be roughly 7.40pm when it rises above the city. And yes, while some clouds are predicted (thanks, Melbourne weather) they may just be out of our way before the supermoon really kicks into gear, even if the conditions have been slated as unideal from senior forecasters.

Astronomical Society of Victoria vice president Perry Vlahos spoke to Fairfax Media, saying our best bet will be to head to an east-facing beach or a mountain with unhindered east-facing views. Considering this, perhaps jump in your car and make the trek out to the Dandenongs and go moonhunting for the night.

Most experts agree that the best time to see the moon will be when it is closest to the horizon.

“That’s when the moon starts to rise, over those next few minutes is when it will appear at its largest,” said the Bureau of Meteorology’s Robert Dickson to The Age.

Tonight’s moon will be a full moon, as well as its closest fly-by since the late 1940s. It’s been a weird fucking week. Sometimes you’ve got to look at the Moon and decompress.
