Wheeler Centre’s new podcast reveals conversations inside Manus Island detention centre

manusisland.jpg

Topically genial, the piece is based on thousands of voice messages sent by Abdul Aziz Muhamat, a refugee from Darfur, Sudan, from inside the Australian-run detention centre on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea.

Since March 2016, Aziz has been communicating with Behind the Wire journalist, Michael Green, via WhatsApp on a smuggled phone.

The product is a fascinating insight into Australia’s immigration detention system, revealing what it’s like to live in detention for years without any prospect of release. Aziz’s many voice messages, traded with Green because the signal is too weak for phone calls, illustrate the reality of life on Manus Island in a way not heard before.
