Enjoy summer sunsets with iconic animals, African beats and eats as Werribee Open Range Zoo brings back its immersive Sunset Safari experience

With many African animals being most active at dusk, the return of Werribee Open Range Zoo‘s Sunset Safari is the perfect time to see some of the world’s most iconic animals, including rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, lions and hippopotamus with glorious walking trails and personalised safari bus adventures, drum performances, cocktails and an African village braai.

A quintessential after-hours wildlife experience, the beloved Sunset Safari is back for a fourth season and will be running 5.30pm to 9pm each weekend, kicking off Saturday 8 January until Sunday 13 March 2022.

This must-see safari adventure provides an exclusive glimpse into the lives of the animals that call the Zoo home. Visitors are being allowed the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable evening of exploring the Zoo’s luminous open plains with a Safari guide at a time of the day where many animals are most active providing an immersive African adventure, with no plane ticket required.

Here, you’ll be able to experience the Zoo’s glorious Savannah during a personalised safari bus tour as the sunset illuminates the open range, and explore the walking trails to witness some of the world’s most iconic animals. During the unforgettable evening, visitors will learn from zoo guides about efforts to fight wildlife extinction, and meet and talk to zoo staff as they journey through the walking trails.

The tour also includes interactive and authentic performances of drums, song and dance to the rhythm and soul of Africa, and comes with a range of food and beverage options – including bistro dining, canapés, cocktails and an African village braai, truly providing an authentic African-inspired experience that people can encounter just minutes from home.

“Sunset Safari allows visitors to experience the essence of Africa, and there’s no plane ticket required,” Werribee Open Range Zoo Director Glen Holland says.

“It’s the perfect setting for people to connect with nature and wildlife as the sun sets on the picturesque Savannah. Through the stories your zoo guide shares, you will learn about the plight of species the wild and how you can join  us on our journey to secure a future rich in wildlife.”

Proceeds from Sunset Safari help Zoos Victoria support international conservation partners such as Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, to strengthen community engagement and foster actions that benefit wildlife, including the hippopotamus, African wild dogs and Grey crowned crane (Uganda’s national bird).

Sunset Safari runs 5.30pm to 9pm each Saturday and Sunday from January 8 to March 13. Entry to the special after-hours event costs $59 for adults and $29 for children. Food and drink packages are sold separately and can be pre-booked or purchased on the night.
