Heidelberg favourite UGO Cucina Popolare cafe has opened a pop-up location for spring/summer in Fitzroy.

Located at the upcoming Fabbrica development, UGO will be ensuring that locals can get amazing coffee and simple Italian food done great every Friday – Sunday. UGO, from the Cannoleria team, has its popular original outpost in Heidelberg West and the cafe is known for its amazing paninis, great coffee and, of course, Cannoleria cannoli.

At UGO Fitzroy, guests can enjoy the signature slow-cooked porchetta panini from 11am, which is available in five varieties, each served in unique focaccia including cocoa, semolina, spelt, potato and onion by No Time For Grace.

UGO Fitzroy paninis

  • The OG – porchetta and semolina focaccia
  • UGO – porchetta, giardiniera, salsa verde, spelt focaccia
  • Elvis – porchetta, capsicum & lemon, caciocavallo and potato focaccia

UGO launched in Heidelberg West in November 2020 to offer simple Italian food done well, including freshly made focaccia, panini, coffee and Melbourne’s best cannoli from Cannoleria. Due to its popularity, UGO opened its second location in Fitzroy for locals to enjoy the Abruzzese style focaccia served with Ugo’s famous slow cooked porchetta and various accompanying fillings, breakfast waffle, English muffin and bagel and delicious desserts.

The name UGO comes from a comedy character in Italy Ugo Fantozzi that showcases the ‘average Italian’ – loves food, soccer and is a little unlucky. Co-owner Dario Di Clerico loved both Ugo and Cannoli while growing up in Italy and when the opportunity for a café came up it seemed the perfect opportunity to bring together two childhood memories.

Vegetarians are not forgotten with the Vego panini with eggplant caponata, burrata and barese focaccia. Those looking for the perfect start to the day can savour a selection of breakfast dishes until 12noon and there’s the option to add Porchetta and/or burrata to each:

  • Mast – waffle, porchetta, pecorino, honey
  • McUGO – English muffin, sausage, burrata
  • UOVO – bagel, egg, avocado, pickled onion

For the sweet toothed, the desserts are a must! Cannoleria cannoli is served freshly piped alongside Biscotti Della Nonna and Ciambellone Sponge Cake. Of course, the perfect coffee blend is a must in any Melbourne cafe and UGO will be serving up St Remio Coffee via espresso, regular, large and mocha choices with extra coffee shot and milk varieties all available for coffee lovers who know what they want.

UGO Cucina Popolare is open Friday to Sunday, 8am-3pm, at 369 Gore Street, Fitzroy.
