Morena and Morena Barra are two of the most unique and exciting openings in Melbourne this year.
Alejandro Saravia has firmly established himself as a key figure in promoting Latin American cuisine throughout Australia’s dining scene. With Morena, his latest addition to Melbourne’s culinary landscape, Saravia continues the success of his earlier ventures, Farmer’s Daughters and Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters.
Drawing from his Peruvian roots, Morena brings the vibrant flavours of Lima to Melbourne, adding yet another exciting venue to his growing portfolio. Morena’s menu, driven by traditional Latin American flavours and supported by Australia’s exceptional produce, lets each dish shine.

Morena Melbourne
Morena Melbourne officially opened its doors on 2 September, 2024, adding two unique venues—Morena Restaurant and Morena Barra—both located at 71 Little Collins Street. Morena Restaurant offers a refined dining experience across two levels, including a balcony that overlooks the street. Diners can indulge in either à la carte or tasting menus, with Latin American and global wine pairings. The ground floor features a chef’s table experience, while the first level houses the main dining room.
Morena Barra
Morena Barra offers a warm yet lively ambiance, embracing the most subtle reminders of Latin America’s bustling street food culture. The intimate, cleverly designed space encourages conversation while providing a view of the chefs in action within the open kitchen. The setting, featuring rich wood tones and minimalistic décor, allows the focus to remain on the share-style plates, with standout offerings like ox tongue skewers, scallops dressed in aji butter, and steaks topped with chimichurri.
Key dishes to highlight:
- Ollucos root braised and served with smoked cream and fresh oca slices: A brilliant starter with a nuttiness similar to Jerusalem artichokes, this dish opens the palate with earthy tones.
- Coral trout tiradito with aji amarillo kosho and mandarin: The standout of the evening, this dish featured a perfect balance of soft heat from the aji amarillo and the sweet, citrusy tang of fermented mandarin. The sauce alone would elevate any grilled fish or a freshly shucked oyster.
Next door, Morena Barra delivers an all-day dining experience inspired by the vibrant cantinas of Latin America, with dishes that tell the story of their origins. Whether you’re exploring ceviche from Peru, Mexico, or Colombia, the menu takes you on a culinary journey across the continent.
