Triple R is bringing back its live gigs with a new performance space and program

Triple R

After a two year hiatus, the 3RRR Performance Space is set to relaunch with a bang next Friday 15 July.

A weekly live to air gig will see the Melbourne institution open its big red doors to audiences for the first time since the pandemic began. The resultant live stream – Live at RRR – will become a new program that will run every Friday from 7-8pm, with local and international acts playing to a lucky crowd, and broadcasting live on 102.7FM and online.

In-conversations and other events will also run in this slot, which will be hosted by a different Triple R presenter each week. But the first round lineup is local and loud: Cash Savage and the Last Drinks kick things off on 15 July, hosted by Bright Lights presenter, Rachel Short. Other upcoming acts include Party Dozen, Clamm, Dallas Woods, Izy, Jen Cloher and Emma Donavan & The Putbacks, with more to be announced.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

As with all the best Triple R live to air gigs of years gone by, you won’t be able to borrow, buy or steal a ticket. Only Triple R subscribers can get their name on the door and they’ll need to be quick. Everyone else can listen in and play along at home.

The last gig scheduled for the Triple R Performance Space was for Memphis blues artist Cedric Burnside back in March 2020. Volunteers were assembled, a full house worth of giveaways were snapped up and anticipation was building for another capacity crowd. But a trickle of information about a new virus turned into a flood of health warnings, and the station decided to pull the pin on Performance Space gigs ‘until further notice’.

“Triple R’s talented volunteers, on and off air, and dedicated staff have done an amazing job of maintaining our core service as a not-for-profit community radio station and media organisation over the past couple of years, and we owe much to the amazing support and independent funding provided by Triple R’s 20,000+ subscribers and donors,” Triple R Station Manager, Dave Houchin said.

“The Triple R HQ in East Brunswick, however, like so many other places, lost much of its vibe as a community clubhouse and bustling hub of togetherness during these physically distanced times, so it’s time to bring that feeling back.

“Following on from The Community Cup, and just a little over a month out from Triple R’s annual subscription and donation drive, Radiothon, it feels like the perfect time to re-launch the Triple R performance space and welcome our supporters back to the building. What better way to do that, than to create an accessible, weekly time slot to get the station and our broader community of volunteers and subscribers together under one roof, one frequency, and one groove.

“A huge thank you to all of the amazing bands and performers who will be joining us, the Triple R volunteer presenters hosting the events, Beź Zewdie (Triple R’s Event Producer) and Bec Hornsby (Triple R Programming & Content Manager), and everyone else who has contributed to making this a reality.”

Subscribers can head here to register for a chance to attend. The annual Triple R Radiothon will run from 26 August – 5 October 2022 under the banner ‘One Station Under a Groove’. Listen to Triple R on 102.7FM and 3RRR Digital in Melbourne; worldwide via RRR Apps and rrr.org.au.
