We are currently seeking applications for the Shelley Muir Editorial Traineeship.

Reporting to a Managing Editor, the Trainee Editor will continue with further studies in editing on a part-time basis (sponsored by Lonely Planet) and will receive on-the-job coaching and training. You will be responsible for the ongoing learning and development of skills to assist the editorial team with the efficient editorial production of quality products. The learning process will involve meeting predetermined key development milestones as outlined in a training plan. Specific areas will involve learning and applying the skills required for Lonely Planet’s editorial production system and procedures, along with house style. In addition, you’ll be learning and applying editorial skills, including copyediting, proofreading, editing maps against text, indexing, captioning images, and taking a product through layout to print.

The traineeship is for 12 months, after which time, it is expected the Trainee Editor will have sufficient skills to take on the role of Editor.

The successful candidate must have a commitment to a career in publishing, a good pass in an undergraduate degree (preferably in Arts, Humanities, Communication etc), and the willingness to undertake postgraduate studies in editing (part-time). In addition, you will need previous travel experience and/or a strong interest in travel, as well as an interest in the world around you.

You will need an excellent understanding of the English language, including grammar and punctuation, and strong attention to detail. Given the nature of the role, a proactive approach to learning, initiative, and the ability to handle the pressure of juggling work and study commitments and to work to tight deadlines are also essential. You will need great organisational and time management skills and you must enjoy working effectively as part of a team. As this is a traineeship, no previous formal editing experience is required, but a demonstrated interest in editing (eg work experience placement, involvement with school or university newspaper/magazine) will be an advantage.
