St Kilda visual artist Julie Shiels was announced as the winner of the Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award last night at the launch of Of Snowflakes and Spacetime, a sculpture exhibition at the Toyota Community Spirit Gallery.
As the winner of the award, Julie receives $10,000 from Toyota to travel to a destination of her choice, interstate or international, with the aim of enhancing her art and furthering her artistic career.
Her artistic career spans more than 20 years and her art includes installation and photography, as well as stencilling abandoned furniture in the street with quotes and stories. Her work explores the way discarded objects can be reworked to capture narraties of contemporary life.
Her submission for the travel award to China was "compelling because it was meticulously planned and strategic to her artistic pursuits and the professional development of her character."
