Explore the cosmos through a new monthly event at Melbourne Planetarium, just for adults.
Scienceworks has been running Discover The Night Sky, a monthly Melbourne stargazing series exclusively for adults with astronomer Dr Tanya Hill as host.
The series mixes science education with proper entertainment, letting participants dive into different astronomical topics each month. Melbourne Planetarium sets the scene for these monthly cosmic adventures, with dazzling visuals beaming onto the 16-metre domed screen while guests recline and learn about exoplanets, the Milky Way and black holes.
Beyond the planetarium shows, the program packs in expert talks and Q&A sessions for those wanting to go deeper. Weather permitting, telescope viewings happen on the Scienceworks Arena with amateur astronomers guiding the sessions. Plus, the Planetarium’s galaxy bar opens from 7pm for drinks and light snacks before or after your cosmic journey.

The 2025 program has covered some seriously cool astronomical ground. July 31 focused on discovering the Heart of the Milky Way, while August 28 explored September’s Lunar Eclipse. September 25 examined Saturn Returns with a closer look at the ringed planet.
Coming up, October 30 highlights the James Webb Space Telescope’s three years of scientific observations, and November 27 offers a tour of the night sky’s brightest stars.
Each session brings fresh perspectives on our universe, designed for both beginners and experienced stargazers. Dr Tanya Hill delivers the astronomical expertise while amateur astronomers provide hands-on telescope experience, making it easy to appreciate our place in the cosmos.
