When a comedy show falls into a discussion on how to spell dirty words you have to worry. Luckily, Tommy Little is the type of person who can make anything funny, no matter how ridiculous or mundane, something that becomes evident in his new show Enter The Weapon.
A lot of the show consists of schoolboy humour as Little discusses various situations where he has tried to live up to his self-proclaimed nickname ‘The Weapon’. None of the jokes are particularly clever or groundbreaking, with stories about getting a tattoo, wine tours and going to nightclubs. Many jokes revolve around a central punchline that keeps being repeated throughout the show and the story, which can become a bit tiring and redundant when the joke wasn’t strong to begin with.
Little’s venture into more serious content, when he speaks of having to host The Project on the night of the Sydney siege, is simply awkward and uncomfortable as he cautiously tiptoes around the sensitive topic. Little doesn’t pull off the serious stuff quite as well as some of his fellow comedians and one questions the inclusion of the siege story in a show that tends to lack any other sombre or personal content.
While the content of his show may fail to push any boundaries, the charm and confidence with which Little tells his stories brings a lot of laughs and it’s certainly easy to relate to more than a few of the now 30-year-old’s tales – even those as simple as common spelling mistakes.
