Orchestra Victoria is bringing gaming music to life, presenting Indie Symphony II across two nights featuring music from beloved indie video games.

Following their sold-out inaugural Indie Symphony show, Orchestra Victoria returns to Hamer Hall with an even more ambitious celebration of indie gaming culture.

Indie Symphony II showcases monumental scores from 10 beloved video games, performed by over 60 musicians alongside a live choir and soloists on 3 and 4 July.

The concert program spans diverse gaming experiences, from the dungeon-crawling adventures of Darkest Dungeon and Undertale to the mythological depths of Hades II and the vast fantasy realms of Baldur’s Gate 3. Each piece represents the sophisticated artistry that has elevated video game music from background accompaniment to concert hall worthy compositions.

Star-studded lineup of performers and composers

Indie Symphony II brings together exceptional talent both on stage and in the creative team. ARIA award-winning performer Montaigne (a passionate gamer) joins soprano Justine Anderson as featured soloists, while the Concordis Chamber Choir adds vocal depth to the orchestral arrangements. ABC Classic’s Game Show host Meena Shamaly guides audiences through the musical journey, providing context and storytelling between pieces.

The evening becomes even more special with appearances from the actual composers behind these beloved soundtracks. Austin Wintory, whose work on Hades II and Abzu has garnered international acclaim, will appear alongside Dan Golding, composer of the memorable Untitled Goose Game soundtrack. Their presence adds authenticity and insight to the performance, bridging the gap between gaming and orchestral music.

From indie darlings to epic adventures

The carefully curated program showcases the incredible diversity within indie gaming music. Audiences will experience everything from Stuart Chatwood’s haunting compositions for Darkest Dungeon to Toby Fox’s melodically complex Undertale soundtrack. The concert includes music from Slay the Spire, Chants of Senaar, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Cult of the Lamb, and Abzu, each representing different emotional landscapes and musical styles.

Baldur’s Gate 3, one of gaming’s most celebrated recent releases, receives special attention with Borislav Slavov’s epic orchestral score. The game’s music perfectly complements its sweeping fantasy narrative, making it ideal for symphonic treatment. Similarly, Hades II continues Supergiant Games’ tradition of exceptional musical storytelling, with Darren Korb and Austin Wintory’s collaborative compositions bringing the underworld to vivid life.

Orchestra Victoria’s commitment to video game music reflects the medium’s artistic maturation. These aren’t simple background tracks but sophisticated compositions that rival traditional classical works in complexity and emotional depth. The orchestra’s previous gaming concerts have consistently sold out, demonstrating Melbourne’s appetite for this unique fusion of digital and traditional artforms.

The concert represents more than entertainment; it’s cultural validation for a generation that grew up with video games as their primary artistic medium. By bringing these compositions to Hamer Hall, Orchestra Victoria acknowledges gaming music’s legitimate place alongside opera, ballet, and classical repertoire.
