There’s an immersive cinema festival coming to Melbourne where you literally look up at the screen

Words by staff writer

Australasia's only fulldome cinema festival returns for its sixth edition this summer.

Your neck is about to get a workout – the Dome Under Film Festival is back at Melbourne Planetarium.

The Dome Under Film Festival (DUFF) returns to Scienceworks from 30 January to 1 February 2026, bringing three days of 360-degree immersive cinema to the planetarium’s giant dome. Now in its sixth year, Australasia’s only festival dedicated to fulldome cinema has grown into a major event on the international fulldome calendar since launching in 2020.

This year’s program spans nine curated sessions across the three days, each running between 75 and 120 minutes. Every film screens once only, so you’ll need to plan ahead. The lineup moves from cosmic exploration to family-friendly adventures – highlights include Unseen Earth, which reveals how space science is changing the way we understand our planet, and One Step Beyond, exploring humanity’s ambitions to reach Mars.

Plus, this year DUFF ticket holders get free entry into Grazeland on the day of their ticket.

Families and younger audiences are well catered for too, with kids’ sessions featuring Hermy’s Secret Full-Moon Hideout and Radiance: A Journey to the Edge of the Galaxy. Other sessions dive into world stories, future visions, and what organisers are calling mind-blowing art – essentially, the kind of visuals that benefit from being projected across an entire ceiling.

DUFF is a founding partner of the International Cooperation of Fulldome Festivals, a global network formed in 2021 that connects fulldome festivals across Germany, the UK, USA, Canada, Czechia and Australia. The partnership has helped expand international film exchange and talent development across the niche but growing medium.

The 2026 festival will also feature a competitive section judged by an international jury of three experts, with awards recognising excellence in immersive storytelling and technical innovation. It’s a chance to see groundbreaking work from filmmakers pushing the boundaries of what cinema can look like when the screen wraps all the way around you.
