Major works for a new Melbourne train station are underway at this beachside suburb, including level crossing removals and new rail bridges.

The Victorian government is building a brand new Melbourne train station as part of this major infrastructure project.

The project eliminates level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale through new rail bridges. Improvements to the local traffic network allow the level crossing at Bear Street to be closed to vehicles. This aims to create a vibrant station precinct with safe pedestrian and cyclist access.

The Victorian government also builds a new Mordialloc Station as part of the project. The Melbourne train station reconstruction forms part of broader network improvements across the Frankston Line.

New Melbourne train station

  • Mordialloc station gets a major makeover
  • Mordialloc will be boom gate free in 2026
  • Project helps create level crossing free Frankston Line by 2029
  • Traffic and public transport distruptions throughout August

Major construction ramps up in August around the Melbourne train station area. Piling works continue as crews build foundations for new rail bridges. During August, workers close Bear Street and the Mordialloc Stabling Yard underpass. Teams continue piling, earth and civil works throughout the precinct.

Sewer realignment works continue on Station Street in Aspendale. Rail infrastructure upgrades include piling, sleeper replacement and drainage works. New underground services and rail systems are installed in Mordialloc and Aspendale around the Melbourne train station corridor.

Electrical and signal upgrades proceed with cable installations. Crews remove overhead wires in the rail corridor. Utility providers continue relocating electricity, NBN, gas and water services. Temporary service interruptions to private properties may occur near the Melbourne train station area.

Upcoming night works

  • 7pm, Tuesday 5 August to 5pm, Saturday 9 August between McDonald Street and Bear Street, Mordialloc
  • 7pm, Friday 8 August to 8.30pm, Monday 18 August between Lewis Street and Bear Street, Mordialloc
  • 7pm, Monday 18 August to 5am, Thursday 28 August in Mordialloc and Aspendale while crews conduct piling, demolition, service installations, and rail infrastructure upgrades.

During this period, buses replace trains on various Frankston Line sections. Replacement services operate from 8.30pm Monday 18 August to last service Thursday 28 August.

Access to homes and businesses remains available throughout construction around the Melbourne train station precinct.

Platform 2 at Mordialloc Station closes from Friday 29 August to mid-2026. Train services in both directions operate from Platform 1 during major construction.

Passengers experience minor timetable changes on the Frankston Line with some reduced services. Mordialloc Station commuter car park closes except for accessible spaces. The station underpass also closes during this period. Passengers access Platform 1 via McDonald, Bear or Main streets around the Melbourne train station.

The project delivers significant improvements to the Melbourne train station network. Piling, demolition, service installations and rail infrastructure upgrades continue throughout the construction period. These works transform the entire Mordialloc precinct and surrounding areas.
