More than 50 new trees and 3,000 plants will transform the heart of Boronia as this new Melbourne train station precinct kicks off construction.

The Victorian government has commenced major works on a new Melbourne train station precinct in Boronia, delivering a modern, accessible station and a landscaped community plaza on Dorset Road. The upgrade is being delivered by the Level Crossing Removal Project and is expected to be completed in spring this year.

The centrepiece of the project is a new plaza connecting the station directly to Boronia’s shopping precinct, featuring green open space, seating and a signalised pedestrian crossing on Dorset Road. It’s designed to make it significantly easier and safer for commuters to move between the station and the local shops.

New Melbourne train station precinct

  • Lupton Way closed to traffic from 27 March until late September
  • New landscaped community plaza on Dorset Road
  • Wider station concourse with new platform shelters, seating and lighting
  • New pocket park near Boronia Junction Shopping Centre with garden beds, trees, seating and a nature play area
  • More than 50 new trees and 3,000 plants across the station precinct and reserve
  • Upgraded pick-up and drop-off zone, better footpaths and more bike hoops
  • Completion expected spring 2026

A six-month construction blitz

With Lupton Way now closing to traffic for around six months, crews will get to work widening the station concourse and building new platform shelters. The upgrade also includes improved lighting and CCTV throughout the precinct, boosting visibility and safety across the entire station area.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams unveiled the final designs for the precinct last year, which feature a striking new forecourt with a canopy design inspired by flora from the nearby Dandenong Ranges. The expanded concourse will improve connections across the rail line, while relocated ticket and protective services offices will open up sightlines through the station.

Green space and community upgrades

The project goes well beyond the platform. A new pocket park near Boronia Junction Shopping Centre will include garden beds, tree plantings, additional seating and a nature play area — a proper green breathing space for the local community. More than 50 new trees and 3,000 plants and shrubs will be dotted across the station precinct, Boronia Station Reserve and the new plaza.

The Boronia Station upgrade follows a wave of level crossing removals and new station projects across the network. The Belgrave Line is already boom gate free between Ferntree Gully and the CBD, while the Lilydale Line became Melbourne’s first completely level crossing free rail line in 2024. Elsewhere, construction is underway on the Melbourne Airport Rail Link at Sunshine, and a new elevated station is planned for Spotswood by 2028.

For locals who’ve been watching the precinct take shape, the message is clear: Boronia’s about to look a whole lot different come spring.
