There's a new intimate gig space hiding above one of Fitzroy North's most beloved pubs.
The Railway Hotel is launching live music programming in its upstairs Ballroom, with Sunny Morris kicking things off.
The Fitzroy North pub on Nicholson Street has been a neighbourhood staple for decades, but the upstairs Ballroom has largely stayed off the gig circuit until now. That changes in March, when the venue begins a new chapter of regular programming in the intimate first-floor room, starting with a four-week residency from Melbourne folk artist Sunny Morris.

The Ballroom will operate as a dedicated space for local acts, with a focus on building a community of regulars rather than chasing big-ticket bookings. It holds up to 120 standing and features a mirror wall, disco ball and its own private bar, giving it a cosy, retro feel that suits stripped-back performances.
Sunny Morris will take the stage every week across March, alternating between solo sets and full band shows. Each night comes with a different support act, with Jacob Diamond opening the 6 March show, Imogen Cygler on 13 March, Kit Zephyr on 20 March and Jarrow closing out the residency on 27 March. Morris released her second album You’re A Liar, Girl through Blossom Rot Records in 2024, a record that blends folk songwriting with orchestral arrangements and explores themes of gender, family and identity.

Triple R named it album of the week on release, and the record marked a shift from her earlier stripped-back folk sound into something more expansive. The Railway Hotel Ballroom is being managed by CG Live, the same team behind Northcote Social Club and the Corner Hotel.
Tickets for all Sunny Morris Ballroom residency shows are available through the Railway Hotel website.
