The public, dressed in creative Catrina attire, will join the walk that will depart at 5:00 pm from the State Library and wind its way through the heart of Melbourne and culminate at The Atrium around 6pm.

A traditional ofrenda will be awaiting the community upon arrival in The Atrium, providing an opportunity to come together and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away. There will be traditional song and dance and, of course, deliciously traditional “pan de muerto” (sweet bread).

Dia de los Muertos is typically observed from October 31st to November 2nd, aligning with the Catholic holidays of All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. Families create colorful ofrendas (altars) adorned with marigolds, candles, sugar skulls, and the favorite foods and mementos of the departed. These ofrendas serve as a way to welcome the spirits back to the world of the living, offering them sustenance and comfort.

Day of the Dead has gained popularity beyond Mexico’s borders and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, symbolizing the resilience of a cultural tradition that persists to this day.
