There’s a massive new live music venue opening near Melbourne’s CBD

Words by staff writer

Slack Sound System launches Shipment, a 1,200-capacity open-air industrial events space.

Melbourne’s underground rave crew Slack Sound System is about to go above ground — literally, in fact, straight into the open air.

The local outfit has announced Shipment, a brand new 1,200-capacity open-air industrial events space located just five minutes from the CBD. Shipment will launch on 28 March with an eight-hour daytime event called Slack Open Air, running from 2pm to 10pm. The exact address is being kept under wraps until the day before, with ticket holders receiving location details ahead of the event.

Slack Sound System has spent the past four-plus years throwing warehouse parties, block parties and pop-up raves across Melbourne, hosting sold-out events at venues including a Collingwood warehouse on Sackville Street and 3 Ravens Brewery in Thornbury. Their annual Christmas pop-up has drawn large crowds for three consecutive years. Shipment marks the crew’s first dedicated venue, shifting from borrowed spaces to a permanent open-air home.

Headlining the launch is Sydney techno producer Efesian, who landed a Beatport number one with his track Can’t Be Stopped. The producer, who hails from Sydney’s north-western suburbs, has had his music supported by the likes of Carl Cox, Klangkuenstler, FJAAK and Partiboi69, and is managed by TMRW Music Group for Australia, New Zealand and Asia bookings.

Rounding out the Slack Open Air lineup are Jove, Slapp, Excess, Olive, T2C, Funknation and MC Manaki.

The venue itself sports a heavy industrial aesthetic — corrugated metal walls, open sky overhead and the Shipment name emblazoned across the facade.
