Yarra City Council and Artbank are presenting 'The Art of the Lunch' - a series of talks with First Nations artists about art and activism over a long lunch that highlights native ingredients.

It will feature an illuminating talk about art and activism with photographer and poet Michael Jalaru Torres, a Djugun-Yawuru man with tribal connections to the Gooniyandi/Jabbir Jabbir/Ngarluma peoples. The evening has a multicourse feast prepared by Fitzroy eatery Rock Paper Scissors, who are putting together a menu that highlights native ingredients – as well as a sparkling wine included in the price of admission. It takes place in an intimate setting at Aunty Kim’s on Sunday, September 18 from 12:30pm until 3pm.

“I am a self-taught photographer and was drawn to photography as a visual medium because of its accessibility and the challenge of capturing stories in single images,” says Michael Jalaru Torres. He is the founder of Blak Lens, a collective of Indigenous photographers formed to support and amplify each other.

“I experiment regularly with different mediums, and I am interested in expanding my photography into installations and motion work and pushing the boundaries of how conceptual photography can be used in virtual reality.”

It goes down on Sunday September 18 from 12:30pm – 3pm. Grab your tickets to this experience before they sell out by heading here
