On Saturday 23 May at Wax Music in Melbourne, the club night will feature an all-Timorese DJ lineup, delivering high-energy global sounds, Afro-Latin diaspora rhythms and infectious grooves that reflect the resilience and rich cultural tapestry of Timor-Leste.
Timor-Leste (East Timor) declared independence from Portugal on 28 November 1975, only to face a brutal Indonesian occupation just days later. Full sovereignty was finally restored on 20 May 2002 after years of resistance and international intervention – a date now celebrated as Restoration of Independence Day.
