Now or Never’s 360-degree dome cinema is an intense visual experience

Neversphere
Words by Staff Writer

The Neversphere - Now or Never's 360-degree immersive dome cinema - is a shining example of human imagination and technological prowess.

In particular, XYZZY by Jess Johnson and Simon Ward, is an unmissable visual experience. Strap yourself in and prepare for a full-throttle journey into retro, nostalgic, Nintendo 64-style visuals in the closest you’ll get to a VR experience without strapping on a headset.

Combining virtual reality with art and storytelling, this unique creation offers visitors an unforgettable journey through time and space, with a huge range of events that vary from relaxing meditative experiences to full-throttle dystopia. We were also lucky enough to check out Extraordinary Alien (Fatima Al Qadiri + Transforma) and Grey Interiors (Actress + Actual Objects) at the Neversphere and the entire experience was truly one of a kind, both relaxing and totally captivating.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Whether it’s to explore the mysteries of the universe, witness historical events, or simply marvel at the beauty of artistic expression, the Neversphere dome offers an experience like few others you’re likely to have in Melbourne, pushing the contemporary boundaries of virtual reality. And most importantly? There are also popcorn, choc tops and a bar.

Acclaimed artists from various disciplines have contributed their talents to create awe-inspiring visuals and soundscapes. A few of the highlights include:

  • Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds and Berlin designer Torsten Posselt
  • Extraordinary Alien by Fatima Al Qadiri and Transforma, Grey Interiors by Actress (British musician Darren J. Cunningham) and Actual Objects
  • A visual cosmology created by artist Jess Johnson and director Simon Ward
  • A full-scale virtual reality film narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson
