Seven new free mental health clinics will open across Melbourne and Victoria as the wellbeing locals network expands.

The Victorian government continues expanding its Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals network in Melbourne. Seven new locations will serve communities across Victoria.

More Victorians will access free mental health support close to home, with no GP referral or Medicare card needed.

The new Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals will open in Cardinia, Darebin, Maribyrnong, Maroondah, Port Phillip, Wyndham and Mount Alexander areas. Mount Alexander will service Central Goldfields and Macedon Ranges too.

These Melbourne mental health services act as a front door to the mental health system and offer support and treatment for Victorians experiencing mental illness or psychological distress. This includes co-occurring substance use or addiction.

Support comes in-person, via telehealth and through outreach services. Care plans reflect each person’s goals and preferences. Family, carers and supporters can participate too.

The new services build on 15 existing Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals. These operate across 17 locations statewide. They have already helped more than 23,000 Victorians access free community-based mental health care.

The growing uptake reflects real progress in delivering accessible care. This community-embedded approach was envisioned by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. The flagship reform continues expanding across the state.

The seven new Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals will open from late 2025. This continues the Victorian government’s ongoing reform and expansion of community-based services. More Victorians will have access to mental health support in their neighbourhoods.

Walk-in support makes accessing help even easier. This service is now available at existing Bairnsdale, Lilydale and Melton locations.

The Victorian Budget 2025-26 invested $34.4 million in these services.

The Victorian government has invested $6 billion in the mental health system since the Royal Commission report. The mental health workforce has grown by 25 per cent during this period.

Essential community-based mental health services will continue across Victoria.
