Reimagining symphonic music, Sky Symphony is set to light up the skies above Birrarung Marr.

This week, Melbourne is set to become the canvas for a breathtaking spectacle that combines music, laser projection, and water screens in a mesmerising event known as Sky Symphony.

It takes place every 20 minutes from 8pm until 11pm across October 11 to 15 – as a part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Catch it for yourself at the eastern end of Yarra Promenade, adjacent to Queens Bridge.

This mysterious and enchanting ceremony of the sky is set to grace the Yarra River, captivating audiences with its unique blend of artistry.

At the heart of this awe-inspiring installation is the vision of Melbourne composer Shaun Rigney.

His desire to forge connections with people and explore the magic of lasers projected onto mist has led to the creation of Sky Symphony.

What began as a collaboration between Rigney and a collective of twenty-seven volunteer photographers has evolved into a synthesis of light, water, music, and the celestial expanse.

The orchestral score, composed by Rigney specifically for this project, is a captivating response to the images he requested from the public. These images have been transformed into a dazzling water projection by the minds at LASERVISION.

The project’s inception was rooted in a single question: How does a composer connect with listeners in the modern world? Rigney’s answer was to create something together. From the pool of three hundred images he received, a symphony was born.

But the journey from concept to reality is where LASERVISION took the reins. They’ve transformed ideas into breathtaking reality, crafting an elemental choreography that combines light, water, music, and sophisticated laser and hydraulic technologies.

The result is an experience that promises to leave spectators awestruck, as the Yarra River becomes a stage for this unparalleled fusion of art and technology.

It’s running this week as a part of Melbourne Fringe. Find out more by heading here.
