Melbourne outfit The Sugar Plum Fairys have just emerged with their debut single, ‘Kurt’ – a tale of bringing yourself out of the pits of laziness and into the world.
Inspired by everyone from Tool to Pink Floyd, in ‘Kurt’, The Sugar Plum Fairys have crafted an indie-rock song by sound – the band’s rhythm section ride a constant journey of catchy guitar riffs, underlying bass and drums, while James Weatherby leads the way on vocals, singing of the difficulties of laziness and trying to get somewhere in life.

“Shit yeah, it’s been fun/I just lazed around/Said I’d become someone who runs/But I never run,” Weatherby sings, struggling to find the motivation to put himself, or the character in question, out there.
At the 2:20 mark, the song leaps into its lead chorus, and the song’s only guitar solo presents itself. A two-part vocal drives the song through its final stretches, as Weatherby consolidates his message.
“Well I never run/I just twiddle my two hands/Two pristine hands/You see a starting gun,” Weatherby sings before the backing vocals emerge.
The world can be a difficult place to navigate when motivation levels are awry. Let’s hope Kurt finds his way.
The Sugar Plum Fairys will launch ‘Kurt’ with two Melbourne shows. They’ll hit Bar Open on Friday August 6 and The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar on Sunday August 29. From there, the four-piece will gear up for their debut EP, set for release in late 2021.
