The Substation is opening its doors in 2018 to a new season of music, immersive installations and performance art. Known for bringing the best in experimental to Melbourne’s Newport, the 100 year old venue will soon play host to acts such as musician/poet Moor Mother, American musician Charlemagne Palestine and Norwegian experimental musician Kim Myhr.
Moor Mother will collaborate with activist Rasheedah Phillips to perform a set she describes as ‘project-housing bop, slaveship punk, (and) witch rap’; Kim Myhr will bring his 60s-inspired guitar-playing prowess to two shows happening as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and Charlemagne Palestine will bring The Substation to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church for a powerhouse organ performance.
The Next Wave Festival also comes to The Substation in the form of three artists visualising a feminine future in Lady Example, and high octane performance art Apokalypsis.
Later in the year, an exhibition called Hyphenated will expose the worlds of Asian-Australian artists, and You’re Standing In It will use liquid mechanics to transform the billboards outside The Substation.
The Substation are also launching a mid-career Commissioning Program for local independent artists so that they may develop and present a significant body of work over time.
