The Spotted Mallard has a new face, becoming The Brunswick Ballroom from February

Words by Tom Parker

The venue’s precursor, The Brunswick Artists’ Bar, launches tonight!

There’s been a fair bit of news coming out of The Spotted Mallard camp in 2020. In May, the beloved Sydney Road live music venue was put up for sale, and after it was sold in the months following, it got rebranded under the new name, The Brunswick Ballroom.

This happened largely under wraps, with a change to the venue’s Facebook name the only real tangible evidence of the shift. Since then, more information on what’s happening down at 314 Sydney Road has come to light and we’ve been advised that The Brunswick Ballroom will enjoy its official launch in February.

But that’s not all, there’s a precursor venue being established prior to that, and it launches tonight. The Brunswick Artists’ Bar, as it’s called, is a cosy watering hole located next door at 316 Sydney Road where The Welcome Swallow once was. It will rekindle the flame, gearing punters up for what’s in store at 314 Sydney Road in the new year.

“It [The Brunswick Artists’ Bar] is your local, a country pub smack bang in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Sydney Road, Brunswick. A cool but never pretentious little club house that caters to all and is warm and inviting,” artist Will Ewing, one of a team of three heading up the new space, told Beat Magazine.

Ewing is joined by theatre producer and concert promoter Andrew Kay AM and food and beverage mastermind Chris Carter as the representatives behind the venue.

The Brunswick Artists’ Bar launches at 6pm tonight at 316 Sydney Road, Brunswick. Keep up to date with the venue at their Facebook page.
